It’s all about the music for Reza Salleh. Whether he is onstage performing or at front-of-house managing a gig, Reza is in it to enrich Malaysia’s music scene. True to his generation, Reza is progressive, bold and proactive.
As a budding singer-songwriter during his college days in Melbourne, Australia, Reza would rise above his fears and perform his music at live shows where critical audiences can be wittingly fierce with their judgement. That fellow Malaysian students who were in Melbourne at the time would testify that “even Aussie kids knew the lyrics to his songs” suggests real talent and an innate skill for showmanship in Reza Salleh. Years later in Kuala Lumpur, he would be one of the top names in the independent singer–songwriter scene.
Reza’s early song–writing days were inspired by popular grunge and alternative rock bands like Nirvana and Rage Against the Machine, and the vocal styles of African-American artists. And perhaps due to the combination of inherent stubbornness and love for all kinds of music, the music he produced was not limited to any particular genre or tone. His inaugural album, Realize, captures perfectly his musical range and adaptability. With punchy rock ensembles and acoustic bossa nova lining his track list, it would be difficult to pin him down to a particular genre. Though this may frustrate some straight–jacket listeners, Reza’s ability to swing between genres is an invaluable asset for any young musician catering to an increasingly diverse audience that is constantly on the lookout for new sounds.
And Reza knows the audience. Upon his return to Malaysia after graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Systems at Monash University, Reza founded an independent singer–songwriter music circuit called Moonshine. Today it is touted as one of the most recognized live music circuit in the Klang Valley, drawing crowds even on Monday nights when venues otherwise would be sombre. After 5 years of staging shows under Moonshine, Reza has mastered the taste of the city’s live music audience and have engaged their support for local independent acts.
Moonshine was founded in November 2005 out of a young man’s frustration of not being able to get booked for shows and sustain a meaningful life through music. Reza was quick to realize that being an independent musician in Malaysia was tough and within a year upon his return from university, he established Moonshine. Although he came home to pursue his own dream of becoming a successful singer–songwriter, the creation of Moonshine was driven by a newfound desire to help and unite other independent acts going through the same difficulties. And so with his guitar still strapped on his back, Reza took on the role and responsibilities of a music booking agent for live performances in the Klang Valley. The early days of Moonshine in fact saw more performances by fellow independent singer–songwriters than Reza himself.
“It is not too bad being back again, in this land where it all began,” he sings in his song Smoke City. The Moonshine initiative paid off. It is today a major contributor to the city’s vibrant live music scene constantly featuring new independent acts and drawing new fans. In just five years it has helped give rise to some of today’s popular artists like Yuna, Najwa and Liyana Fizi. But the struggle must go on for Reza. Access to airtime, distribution of music and quality of sound are among the issues he has taken up as part of a personal cause to help enhance the independent music scene in Malaysia.
Reza’s inaugural album, Realize, which compiles original music written over ten years of his song–writing career, is a tribute to fellow independent musicians who have taken the risk of leaving their “desk jobs” to pursue their dreams – and to those who are considering it.”
